Care Teams

Volunteers are trained and supervised in the provisions of non-medical care. Care Teams consist of 4-6 volunteers, dependent on client needs. Typically, individual volunteers commit to one visit with their client each month or 6-8 hours per month with AssistHers activities.

Included in the monthly activity is participation in a 3 hour volunteer meeting every 2nd Saturday of the month. 2nd Saturday activities include meetings of each team, organizational announcements, team circles, and an educational program. Team circles are facilitated by a licensed mental health professional. Each circle consists of 10-12 teams, depending on size, and the purpose is to provide support and guidance to the volunteers and to encourage healthy boundaries with the clients.

Facilitators

Facilitators serve as a conduit between volunteers, the client and the Board. They provide another avenue to nurture, cherish and appreciate volunteers. Secondly, they provide a mechanism to resolve problems and conflicts, foster good communication and good boundary setting. Lastly, they provide opportunity and a safe environment for sharing feelings and thoughts, the big picture, and information gathering about how teams are functioning.

Supplemental Food Assistance Program

Grocery Store Cards for food and personal item purchases are provided monthly to clients who need assistance.

Transportation Program

AssistHers provides taxi vouchers to clients to help with transportation to medical appointments. Occasionally, and when available, AssistHers volunteers may provide transportation.

Case Management

Case Managers at the Montrose Center assess the client’s needs. The client is then matched with services and/or agencies in the community in order to meet those needs.

Education

As stated in our mission statement, AssistHers is committed to educating lesbian women and others about important health issues and provides monthly education presentations on health related topics. Topics include Breast Cancer Awareness programs, Women and Depression, Homophobia, Parenting, Boundaries, etc. Education presentations are open to the public.

Public Speakers

Volunteers are available to provide presentations about our organization.
