AssistHers is honored to be a beneficiary of Kindred Spirits both past and present. Huge thanks to all who could join us in supporting Kindred Spirits Foundation at their Annual Holiday Cabaret Sing-A-Long this past Sunday, December 6th at Meteor. Here is the history of Kindred Spirits Foundation:
Kindred Spirits Foundation, Inc.
Kindred Spirits became more than the name of the nightclub Marion E. Coleman founded in 1980. It also acted as a hub for Houston’s lesbian and gay community by hosting organizational meetings, fundraisers, and theatrical presentations.
The 1980s were pivotal in our community’s development. Kindred Spirits offered gay women and their friends a safe, uplifting atmosphere. Bolstered with new-found confidence and knowledge of strength in numbers, many of Kindred Spirits’ original patrons went on to become our community’s successful business, organization, and political leaders.
Even though the nightclub closed in 1989, this sense of community lived on. Many patrons urged Coleman to hold a reunion dance. The 2002 Reunion Celebration Dance began an annual event that continues today. Enjoyable events such as the Golf Tournament and Holiday Cabaret Sing-A-Long were added. The monies raised are donated to designated community charities.
In 2009, with an official 501(c)(3) designation, Kindred Spirits became a Foundation to continue the legacy of Kindred Spirits and its service to our community by enhancing women’s lives.AssistHers sincerely appreciates the support and funding we receive from our Supporters and Sponsors. Please take time to find out about them and the wonderful work they do.
