An Exploration of the Experiences of Lesbian with Chronic Illnesses
by Elizabeth L. Walden, Ph. D.

The Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project: Issue 1

Education

Through monthly Saturday morning training sessions, volunteers committee members, and friends of the organization spend an hour learning about health related issues such as Breast Cancer Awareness, Women and Depression, Homophobia, Health Care, and more. Inservices start with the following times:

July 10, Andrea Washington, Topic: "Boundaries"
Andrea Washington is the current VP of Facilitators and has been a volunteer with AssistHers since 2003. She is a licensed clinical social worker currently working with Montrose Counseling Center with the LGBT/HIV+ community as a psychotherapist. She has been dubbed the "Queen of Boundaries" or "the Boundaries Goddess". She embodies the quote "don't judge a book by its cover" as she is a multi-tattooed and a motorcycle riding social worker/therapist who was previously a public school teacher.

August 14, Judge Barbara Hartle, Topic: "Never Say Never"
On May 5, 2010, Barbara E. Hartle was appointed by Mayor Annise Parker and the City Council of Houston as the Presiding Judge and Director of the Municipal Court Judicial Department.  Barbara is Mayor Parker’s first LGBT appointee and was the first openly lesbian Judge in the State of Texas.  Prior to this appointment, Barbara had served the Court as an Associate and Full-time Judge since first being appointed by Mayor Bill White in 2006.
